NAWIC Tours Jackson & Blanc District Cooling and Central Plant Control Station

On Wednesday, May 24, 2017, members of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) San Diego Chapter toured Downtown San Diego's East Village District Cooling and Central Plant operated by Jackson & Blanc. The plant provides chilled water to local buildings via an underground closed-loop system.
Operating a central cooling plant that feeds several surrounding buildings offers multiple benefits for customers:
- Users only pay for the water that they need.
- A central system frees up space in buildings by removing the equipment required for a stand alone system, which allows for more revenue-generating space.
- There is a reduced upfront mechanical cost because the property owner isn't purchasing equipment.
- There are reduced long term costs because the property owners aren't maintaining the equipment.
The automated East Village plant currently serves Petco Park, Downtown Library, Omni Hotel, Diamond View Tower, Metropolotan Condominiums and more.
