My guest is Lauren Stumpf, Marketing and Media Communications Specialist with Rancho Mesa. Today we're going to talk about the recent updates made by the state of California to the labor pamphlets that must be provided to employees. Lauren, welcome to the show.
Lauren Stumpf: Hi, Alyssa. Thanks for having me.
AB: Now, these pamphlets are documents that employers are required to provide to their employees to ensure that they are informed about their employment rights and benefits provided by the state. So, Lauren, can you explain which pamphlets have been updated?
LS: Of course, the first one is the Time of Hire Pamphlet from the California Department of Industrial Relations Division of Workers' Compensation. This defines workers' compensation and explains how employees can file a claim and gain access to medical care. The other is the Four-Year Benefit Pamphlet created by the Employment Development Department, EDD. This document outlines benefits provided to employees by the state in the event of their termination or when they take certain leaves of absence. It informs employees about the like obtaining unemployment insurance, the tax requirements for unemployment benefits, which employees are not eligible for unemployment benefits, and who is eligible for state disability insurance.
AB: Alright, and both have really important information. When do these documents need to be provided to employees?
LS: Employers must provide the updated Time of Hire Pamphlet to new hires, and the Four-Year Benefit Pamphlet must be provided both at the employee's time of hire and their dismissal.
AB: Great, so Lauren, is there anything else that you think that our listeners should know about these documents?
LS: Yeah, just one last thing. Another update the state made was to the California Labor Code Section 2810.5 back in January. This requires employers also provide employees with a written notice about their wages, such as pay rates, overtime rates, and designated paydays. This notice is another document that must be given to employees when they are hired or if there is a change of information in the notice.
AB: That's really good to know. So with these recent changes now in effect, it's important for employers to evaluate the materials they provide to their employees to ensure compliance.
